Treasurys rise after 30-year note auction

Treasury prices rise after gov't auctions $11 billion in 30-year bonds to strong demand

NEW YORK (AP) -- Treasury prices rose Thursday after the government auctioned $11 billion in 30-year bonds to robust demand.
The auction got nearly two-and-a-half as many bids as notes available. The Treasury Department has been selling debt at a record pace as it tries to fund the government's stimulus and bailout efforts. Just this week, it auctioned $63 billion in long-term government securities.

As the stock market rallied, Treasury prices rose, too.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose 14/32 to 99 1/32. Its yield fell to 2.86 percent from 2.91 percent late Wednesday. Prices move opposite yields.
The two-year note rose 1/32 to 99 23/32, and its yield fell to 1.01 percent from 1.02 percent.
The 30-year bond rose 30/32 to 98 1/32, and its yield fell to 3.61 percent from 3.67 percent.
The yield on the safe-haven three-month Treasury bill slipped to 0.20 percent from 0.22 percent. The discount rate was 0.21 percent.
The cost of lending between banks dipped slightly. The British Bankers' Association said the London Interbank Offered Rate, or Libor, on three-month loans in dollars fell 0.01 percentage points to 1.32 percent. Libor is down significantly from its peak last fall, but up from its mid-January low of 1.08 percent.

Focus Your Emotion

Having a focused mind and purpose could only make you a better trader. In any trading day there are series of activities. Different pairs and crosses but do you trade them all at once? If you are learning to bake a cake you don't start with ten but you begin with one. As you master your baking, then you begin to add more dough to your baking tray.

The same holds true with currency trading. To master your trade you need to pick one pair or cross you think you could master. Study it and learn to trade it very well and quickly. Master this instrument until you become very proficient in both currencies involved. Learn more about what drives it. Who the key players are? Whose voices could drive that market? In fact be informed on that currency pair than anyone else you ever known. Seek to grow and be better at it everyday from your previous trades. Maintain this single handling until it fills your dream.
Another important aspect of your focus is your emotions. How you feel and act under trading conditions are critical to your forex trading successes. How do you act under pressure? How would you conduct yourself if you were making huge gains from you trading positions? Does your emotion run wild or calm? And how do you behave when you lose? Do you still maintain the same calm persona? Do you have distractions in your trading environment? All these could heavily impact your trades. There is a trading commandment called "Know thyself". It is an unwritten rule only you could define.

You know yourself better than anyone else. You know what sort of money your mind could handle before your heart rate start beat skipping. What you must do is to avoid the enigma of allowing your emotions to rule your trade.

As a trader you are obligated to have a balanced temperament at all times. For example, do you take to calculated risks or trade by instinct? What you want to do is develop yourself to the level you would have mastered your emotions to take those intuitive decisions in the market environments. But these answers won't come over night until you have built discipline to your trade and emotions. This brings us to the last and final part of your trading requirement.

Terms you should be familiar with

Interbank market: the method by which banks and hedge funds trade on the Forex market- it is by far and way the largest part of the market.
Retail market: the market place for private investors
International Standard Organisation (ISO): the code by which a currency is described, for example GBD - for sterling
Price notation: A currency is always valued relative to another currency - usually the dollar. The notation GBD/USD = 2.000, means there are two dollars for every unit of sterling
Majors and crosses: Pairings with the US dollar are known as the ‘majors.’ The ‘big four’ majors are: -

EUR/USD: euro/US dollar • GBP/USD: sterling/US dollar (known as “cable”) • USD/JPY: US dollar /Japanese yen • USD/CHF: US dollar/Swiss franc
Pairings of non-US dollar currencies are known as ‘crosses.’ We can calculate cross rates for GPB, EUR, JPY and CHF from the aforementioned major pairs. For example:
EUR/JPY = (EUR/USD X USD/JPY)
Big figure, points or pips: a currency is usually represented by four digits after the decimal point - the main exception being the yen which is represented by two digits. The first two numbers after the decimal point are known as the ‘big figure.’ The second two figures after the decimal point are known as points or pips.
Long and short: a speculator who is said to have gone ‘long’ on a currency is buying that currency. A speculator who is said to have gone ‘short’ on a currency is selling that currency.
Margin: Investors are typically asked to pay between 1 and 5 per cent of a currency trade. If the currency then loses value, then the speculator maybe be asked to provide additional cash, to ensure the percentage margin is maintained.
Lots: A speculator will normally buy a currency in lots- typically 100,000 units. Some brokers offer mini lots.
Spread: There is no dealing charge as such in currency speculation, but the speculator will be quoted a spread. The spread is written in a particular format. For example, GBP/USD = 1.8000/05 means that the bid price of GBP is 1.8000 USD and the offer price is 1.8005 USD. The spread in this case is 5 ‘points.’
The larger the currency investor, the smaller the spread quoted. Thus banks and hedge funds have an inherent advantage over the private investor in that they can trade on much keener prices and enjoy profits on smaller fluctuations.
